The Trench Manual was crafted as the go-to resource for emergency responders when faced with complexities of an excavation-related emergency. It was designed to be user-friendly, ensuring ease of navigation even in high-pressure situations.
The goal? To equip EMS responders with the knowledge they need to tackle excavation emergencies with confidence. Through this manual, EMS responders are familiarized with essential safety measures outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations, giving responders confidence in the stability of the excavations that they may need to access.
This manual breaks down the three key methods employers use to keep excavations safe based on provincial OHSA regulations: proper sloping, sturdy shoring systems, and reliable protective shields or barriers.
